1. Rheinpark
Located on the right bank of the Rhine River, Rheinpark is one of Cologne’s most beloved and well-kept green spaces (except for the Canadian Geese poo) having won best park in Germany in 2007 and the second most beautiful in Europe. It offers wide-open lawns, walking trails, and beautiful views of the city skyline and Cologne Cathedral across the river. With playgrounds and a small train for kids, it’s also a family favorite. Make sure to check out under the bridge on it’s Northern end for some basketball courts, mini-golf and a skate park too. 2. Botanical Garden / Flora
Nature lovers abound in Cologne’s Botanical Garden, located next to the zoo. With beautifully landscaped gardens, tropical greenhouses, and over 10,000 plant species, this is a peaceful escape into nature and a photographer’s dream. 3. Stadtgarten
Stadtgarten is a peaceful urban park situated in the heart of the city that you can easily miss when spending a weekend here. On the edge of both Ehrenfeld and the Belgian Quarter, this park is perfect for relaxing between sightseeing stops and shopping. Grab a bite at the restaurant (that acts as a beer garden as well if you just want to cool down) or check out the Christmas Market here in winter for one of the more local-driven shopping experiences. A hidden but lively local spot that combines culture and nature, it’s definitely worth a stop to calm down on a sunny afternoon in town!
4. Volksgarten
This one is definitely the local favorite in the Südstadt district, especially now that they’re rebuilt and improved the large, beautiful pond in its center. Volksgarten offers serene pathways for walking, lakeside picnic areas, and plenty of shade for warm-weather strolls. Visitors can rent pedal boats, grab a drink at the beer garden run by favorite brewery Hellers, or just relax on the lawns for a barbecue, something you’ll smell all around the area during hot summer days. You’re also not far from the large Vorgebirgspark where you’ll find quieter paths, a rose garden and large fields to relax and catch some sun.

5. Aachener Weiher & Hiroshima-Nagasaki Park
This area is a hotspot for Cologne’s younger crowd, especially in the warmer months. Students flock to the large green space surrounding the Aachener Weiher lake, ideal for sunbathing, barbecues, and people-watching. It’s also conveniently located near several museums, the university district and will be loaded with drinking-game-enthuasiasts, frisbee-throwers, music and the occasional dance party all through the summer nights. Very much an the urban park on this list, don’t expect to escape the city here but you’ll definitely get the feel of the student life in Cologne here.

6. Decksteiner Weiher
The Southern edge of Cologne’s outer greenbelt, Decksteiner Weiher is perfect for those seeking tranquility. The size of the park alone makes it easy to escape for hours and explore. It features long, tree-lined pathways, quiet ponds, and scenic bridges—making it a favorite for joggers, cyclists, and nature lovers alike. From here, you can begin to traverse much of Cologne’s beautiful Grüngurtel, finding yourself in animal parks, sports fields and even the Cologne Stadium where our beloved football team plays. This outdoor space is one really only locals visit so among our parks in the city, this might be your most tourist-free!
7. Poller Wiesen
Want the best sunsets in Cologne? You’ll have to cross the river but nothing beats the views from our Eastern bank as the sun slips below the horizon. Poller Wiesen is our go to outdoor space on that side of the river. With cool summer evenings due to the proximity to the water, great spots for picnicking, large fields for soccer and kite-flying, Poller Wiesen is a go-to-spot in summer to sit along the Rhein and catch some of the most beautiful views the city has to offer.
